PIP- What is Personal Injury Protection?
Florida is known as a “no fault” state when it comes to auto accidents. Esentially, this means if you are in an auto accident in Florida, even if you are not at fault for the accident, you would look to your own car insurance company to pay a part of your medical expenses and/or wage losses under your policy that contains PIP. This coverage protects you against losses you sustain as a result of personal injuries from an automobile accident and pays 80% of reasonable, necessary and related medical expenses, as well as 60% of your gross wage loss resulting from your accident related injuries.

In the event of an accident, it is crucial that you contact your auto insurance company and inform them of the accident immediately. Your auto insurance will open a claims file for you. They also will have you fill out a PIP application that gives information on your medical providers you are treating with, your injuries, details in regards to the accident, and information about your job employer. Your PIP insurer must be authorized to get medical records and bills and job confirmation before they are legally responsible for 80% of your accident related medical expenses and lost wages.
